Buy Now Button Colors

by admin on February 10, 2009

I need everyone’s help today. It has been brought to my attention by more than one person that my typical red “buy now” button is too invasive. One example that I hear is that when people see red, they think “stop!” as opposed to when they see green, they think “go!”, like a stop light. This makes sense to me, but I keep seeing several big companies using red for their “buy” buttons. I have always figured that since big companies spend a lot on research, that they probably know what they are doing, so I copy them.

One website that refuses the typical “big red button” is woot.com. Woot used to be orange, but since their last re-design, the button has been yellow.

What is your opinion? Which of the following colors makes you want to click? Which of the following buttons makes you want to buy something, or at least click out of curiousity? At the same time, which of the colors makes you want to run away the most?

We have Aqua, Black, Green, Orange, Grey, Purple, Red, White, Yellow and Blue. Which button makes you want to click, and which button makes you want to run away?

I think the green button will work best :)

I like the green and yellow. Perhaps think about combining some colors.
I just want to run away at the grey; but all things considered, I think that the web-site and the surrounding images have a great deal of influence.

Green says: Buy now to save the planet from carbon footprints.
Red says: Danger! Strong undertow; Buy now.
Blue says: Buy now from Babies’s R Us.
Grey says: Buy me a color now.
Yellow says: Don’t pass, buy a schoolbus today.
Black says: D.A.R.E.
White says: Buy me like a boring black and white newspaper.

Orange says: Be cool and click on me.

Definitely green. It catches my eye right away. Go green!

I think the red or green works best. Red does trigger somewhat of a *WARNING* sign. The green is more action-oriented.

The black, white and grey just meh. The blue and orange and yellow are kinda meh.

However, I think your buy now button should tie in with your overall aesthetic and not be a sore thumb. You don’t need it to be OMGWTFBUTTON to be useful or effective.

I am drawn to the orange first.

Ack! I forgot to add blue at the beginning. Here it is now.

I like the yellow/grey. However, it completely depends on the design and colors on the website that the button is on. So I can’t really say.

I’ll go with the “Green mean’s GO” concept, although there is always “It’s not easy being green!”

My Vote is Green

I was asking myself the exact same thing today (found this post in web results). I think that “Tom Cruise” has a very good point here.

Test different colors and track results – you will see which works best for you.

i’m in general jumping all over the internet most of the night hence I possess a tendency to peruse a good deal, which unfortunately is not generally a beneficial thing as most of the web sites I find are made up of pointless crap copied from some other websites a million times, but I have to compliment you because this site is genuinely enjoyable and also has a lot of genuine information, so kudos for removing the pattern of simply just replicating other peoples’ sites, if you ever wanna play a few hands of myspace poker with me just email me – you have my e-mail :)
